FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?
Acupuncture is safe and effective when performed by a trained, qualified and licensed professional. Acupuncturists must undergo a minimum of 3 years of training in New York State, in an accredited Master's program and must pass the national board exams in order to be licensed to practice.  Acupuncture promotes healing and encourages the body to regulate itself in a gentle way, rather than forcing it.

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
Most patients have stated that there is little or no pain as very fine, sterile, disposable needles are used.  Treatments are available without the use of needles as well, using a gentle massage technique at the acupuncture points called acupressure.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING TREATMENT?
Patients generally lie comfortably on a massage table while very fine acupuncture needles are gently inserted. You are then able to rest, as the acupuncture treatment does it's work.   Most people find it a relaxing and pleasant experience as well as feeling calmer and more energetic in the days following treatment.  Other techniques may be used alone or in conjunction with needles:  Heat; cupping; moxibustion (heat applied with an herb); electro-stimulation; Gua sha (a traditional scraping technique); or massage of the acupoints and/ or meridians.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR TREATMENT?
You should wear loose comfortable clothing.  We recommend that you have something small to eat before your session and not to be treated on an empty stomach.  It is best to turn off your cell phone during your treatment to help promote a deep state of relaxation.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BE TREATED?
Acupuncture treatment depends on your chief complaint, the progression and history of the condition and other factors.  Generally speaking, patients come in one to two times per week for a series of treatments.  As with other forms of healing, the patient's attitude and lifestyle choices about diet, sleep and exercise will play a key role in the outcome. Patients are encouraged to take an active role in the healing process and to be their own best advocates to achieve their optimum state of health and well being.

CAN CHILDREN BE TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?
Children of all ages are treated and respond well to acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatment.  In addition, young children who may be apprehensive of the use of acupuncture needles may be treated without the use of needles with acupressure.

CAN I COMBINE ACUPUNCTURE WITH MASSAGE/ CHIROPRACTIC/ OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT/ MEDICATION/ EXERCISE/ PHYSICAL THERAPY, ETC. ?
You can combine acupuncture with many other treatment modalities and sometimes we even recommend adjunctive therapies to maximize the benefits in certain conditions.  It will not interfere with other treatments and nothing is going to make it less effective.  It is one of the reasons that so many doctors refer their patients to acupuncture.

WILL ACUPUNCTURE BE COVERED BY MY HEALTH INSURANCE?
